Hazhal Amedi University of Colorado I was born in Duhok and moved to Clarkston, GA in 1997 under operation pacific haven. My family and I spent a couple months in Guam until we were resettled in Clarkston. I graduated from Agnes Scott College in 2014 with a BS in Neuroscience. Since then I have been living in Colorado and working at the University of Colorado. At the University, I worked as a researcher focused on auto-immune diseases and I also performed stem cell transplants on cancer patients. Something I enjoy doing on my free time is distance running. I ran my first marathon in 2017, and I hope to train for another one in 2022. It feels good to accomplish goals and push yourself to the next marker. I also enjoy making digital music and singing, although I am not very good at it. |
Sarwar Kokoy The University of Tennessee Health Science Center I am first generation Kurdish-American living in Nashville, TN. Recently, I just graduated from Lipscomb University in Fall 2020 and will be attending UTHSC COM in Fall 2021. Since I began my undergraduate studies, I have been involved in my community mostly through youth programs and mentoring young students under an organization called the Anhar Institute. Currently, I work on a project called the Hypertension Education Project under Dr. Heval Kelli. This project is designed for members to go to local clinics and underserved communities in order to educate patients about hypertension and provide free blood pressure cuffs for those in need. Our goal is to educate patients on what exactly does it mean to have high blood pressure and discuss ways to track their own blood pressure at home. I also work in a Biopharma lab called Aegis where we run COVID-19 samples during the pandemic. |
